Since the official launch at the end of November 2022, the worldwide spread of ChatGPT shows how this tool is a revolutionary innovation for our company: it took just 5 days to reach 1 million users (today it is about 100 million) and is expected to have an even larger user pool in the future.

To fully understand the reasons for this disruptive spread, let’s find out what ChatGPT is and what it can do.

ChatGPT: a chatbot different from the others

ChatGPT, an acronym for Pre-trained Transformer Generative Chat, is an AI software developed by OpenAI to support conversations with humans. This chatbot is the evolution of a front model called GPT-3 and is a concentrate of some of the most viral concepts of the moment in the field of technological innovation: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are just a few of these.

The real heart of ChatGPT is the LLM (Large Language Model), a language model based on AI that understands language in a mathematical sense and is able to understand the probability distribution of a sequence of words. This allows the chat, once received in input the most disparate questions, to generate answers of human quality more or less long, contextualized and accurate, which could hardly be found through a search engine or by questioning another chatbot.

The goal is to establish an interactive conversation between the user and the chatbot thanks to its wide natural language processing capacity and its wide knowledge, which comes from training on the enormous amount of data to which he was subjected during the learning phase.

What is ChatGPT capable of?

Trying to imagine the countless fields of application of such a radical innovation is rather difficult, especially if you think that this is an early beta version of ChatGPT to collect user feedback and data on its performance: the chat, in fact, seems to be able to do everything, for everyone.

Putting it to the test one realizes that it is particularly skilled in producing texts concerning the most varied themes with extraordinary adaptation to a very precise style, be it a poem of Dante or a letter of reply to a verification of the revenue.

In addition, it has a large and expanding vocabulary of codes and this allows it to be extremely accurate in understanding and writing many programming languages, such as Python, Java, C++, JavaScript, and many others.

All these applications can be integrated through API to tools and software already in use in the company and in the private sector (think of a simple Excel spreadsheet rather than BI solutions or the most common corporate CRM).

Just these days Microsoft is making available the integration of ChatGPT in the Office suite, Bing has integrated it into its search engine and Google is adapting with the introduction of Bard.

Possible risks of ChatGPT

ChatGPT, together with its competitors of Artificial Intelligence aims to facilitate the life of humans by acting as a brain able to answer any doubt or question, both in the work and personal space.

From its use, however, are not exempt possible risks or disadvantages:

  • This chatbot is the first widely known AI technology that challenges the only hallmark that man has always thought of having on machines: creativity. In fact, since its launch it has taken a few days to give rise to a sense of concern on the part of copywriters, marketing specialists or programmers, who feel their profession threatened.
  • Many people wonder if receiving in a short time all the answers that human beings need can cause an intellectual poverty of man, making him gradually lazier or less curious.
  • The algorithm is not 100% reliable and the web is full of examples in which ChatGPT has given bizarre or inaccurate answers: it is also true that at the moment we are using a first free version and updated until 2021, so the tool cannot give answers about 2022 or about future events.
  • Unlike the answers and articles obtained through research on the internet, which are entirely written (for now) by man, ChatGPT writes independently articles, emails and speeches for humans, but it is not a human being. Probably in the future this will generate problems related to the authenticity of a text and it will be more difficult to determine what is the fruit of artificial intelligence and what was written by a human intelligence.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence

ChatGPT is proof that AI is no longer just a term of tendency to use in articles that speak of the future, but a tool that still supports man and will integrate more and more in his daily life and working life. Just think that it is already perfectly integrated in areas such as surgery, computer science or industrial production, where it performs tasks with a precision that can only be achieved by a machine.

Many, on the other hand, believe that these increasingly powerful instruments are destined to oppose man.

Without entering into apocalyptic scenarios, the field of AI is undoubtedly still to be discovered and could hide dangers for man, but it is also true that if designed with the purpose of helping man and not to replace him (see for example ChatGPT) Artificial Intelligence is an extraordinary tool for technological advancement for society.

To stay on topic, we also asked ChatGPT and this was his answer:

“Artificial intelligence is an ever-changing field and its future is the subject of much discussion and debate. AI will continue to automate tasks and processes, improve the ability of machines to learn and adapt to new and complex situations, and this will lead to increased efficiency and productivity in many industries.”
